When asked by Strange Maine why he did it, he replied that it is because he "loves Maine so dearly," and "wanted to show the South how a grand man of Maine conducts himself."
Huzzah for the Earl! May he fare well as he sets out far from home.

What does it say on the banner across the star?
Dirigo -- the state motto, meaning "I lead."
Yep!!! :) "As Maine goes, so goes the nation." Dunkin Donuts also likes to advertise their coffee here using a slogan something along the lines of "where America starts the day."
There's a nice Wikipedia article about the slogan here.
Who did the ink? It is good work and some artist deserves the credit.
anothermaine-- If I recall correctly, it's my buddy John Biswell over at Just Good Tattoos. He specializes in that type of piece and does a great job at it!!
Correct on all fronts: Dirigo="I Lead" and John Biswell=Very premium tattoo artist whose work healed better by far than any other I have had and who also had a very delightful bedside manner. Just Good Tattoos is altogether a fantastic shop, as it must be to attract the aristocratic clientele which it has, in fact, lately attracted. See you soon,
A.
"the best Maine tattoo I've seen yet" Have you seen others? I'm collecting images of tattoos featuring state outlines and have never seen one of Maine. (Just got my first New Hampshire yesterday, though.)
jonprof-- Sorry so late replying! Stay tuned, by the end of the year I should have one of my own to send you pictures of. *grin*
